RIO DE JANEIRO
WHAT NOT TO MISS!
Always pay attention to your belongings (watch out for pickpockets), use Uber instead of taxis, opt for official services, and check visitation hours before heading to attractions.
🏝️ DAY 1
Morning: Ipanema Beach Posto 9, best if you arrive before 8 a.m. Don’t miss trying the beach mate (vendors with large containers of a brown drink—it’s like tea mixed with lemon juice), Globo biscuits, and grilled queijo coalho (cheese).
Afternoon: Have lunch at a nice place, Drink Caipirinhas. Visit Corcovado. Rest a bit at the hotel to prepare for a lively samba night.
Night: Enjoy a samba roda (samba circle). I recommend Arco do Telles if it’s Saturday or Casarão do Firmino Casarão do Firmino (@casaraodofirmino)
🥾 DAY 2
Morning: How about a light hike with an incredible view? Take an Uber to Praça General Tibúrcio, walk to Pista Cláudio Coutinho and continue to the entrance of the Morro da Urca trail—it’s well-signposted. This easy trail takes you to the top of the hill next to Sugarloaf Mountain. At the top, you can enjoy a cold beer and an amazing view of Rio Then, you can decide to go back down the same trail or buy a ticket for the Sugarloaf cable car – tickets can be purchased right at the top. Note: If you prefer something more adventurous, you can climb Sugarloaf. Let me know, and I’ll share contacts for reliable guides.
Afternoon: Have lunch at Terra Brasilis. Right next door is Praia Vermelha.
Night: Visit Bafo da Prainha and Pedra do Sal—they’re very close to each other. This area holds great historical significance for Rio de Janeiro and offers plenty of samba, funk, beautiful people, and good vibes.
🚲 +DAY 3
Morning: For sports enthusiasts—run or cycle (you can rent a bike via an app) along the Copacabana waterfront or Aterro do Flamengo. Have breakfast at Forte de Copacabana.
Afternoon/Evening: Visit Escadaria Selarón. Then, take an Uber to Santa Teresa (ask for Largo dos Guimarães), enjoy a feijoada at Bar do Mineiro, and explore Parque Glória Maria/Parque das Ruínas. Then head to Mirante Dona Marta to watch the sunset. If it’s Friday or Saturday, return to Largo dos Guimarães for live music at Samba do Guimarães or opt for a fancy dinner at Aprazível.
🏖️ +DAY 4
Morning: Relax at Leme Beach, preferably near https://www.instagram.com/rasta.beach/
Afternoon: How about a tour on a completely safe favela? Visit The Maze Rio. Simply take an Uber to "The Maze." Upon arrival, follow Google Maps or ask a local—some offer guide services for no more than 15 reais. You’ll get a glimpse of favela life and visit an incredible art center with breathtaking views.
Night: Head to Beco do Rato, a very local spot with ice-cold beer.
👨🎨 +DAY 5
Morning: Visit the CCBB – Cultural Center, which always features incredible exhibitions, or the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (voted one of the world’s most beautiful libraries; check visitation hours). Have coffee at Confeitaria Colombo, a preserved café over 100 years old—try the coxinha.
Afternoon: Tour the Theatro Municipal.
Have lunch at Lilia Restaurante https://www.instagram.com/lilia.restaurante/?hl=pt or at https://www.instagram.com/labuta_bar/?hl=pt-br
Night: Pavão Azul, a quintessential Rio de Janeiro boteco (casual bar).
